CSDDD at the EU Council, “It is to stop corporate abuse and guarantee global solidarity”
In the next days the Council of the European Union will vote on the on the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD). If agred, this Directive would impose an obligation on companies based and operating in the EU to prevent possible risks posed by their activities to human rights and the environment, both in Europe and abroad. The CSDDD would also require businesses to end and remediate those negative impacts.
In this context, actors of different nature, including Catholic organisations, are urging the governments of EU Member States to promptly adopt the compromise text resulting from the political trialogue negotiations held in December 2023.
This is the case, for example, of the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Union (COMECE) and the Coopération internationale pour le développement et la solidarité (CIDSE). They jointly issued a statement affirming that "now more than ever, we need mandatory supply chain due diligence to stop corporate abuse and guarantee global solidarity".
